During the holiday season, between Thanksgiving and New Year’s day, the amount of waste we generate increases by a whopping 25%. That equates to an extra million tons each week in the form of food waste, shopping bags, bows, ribbons, packaging, and wrapping paper, to name a few. In addition, our energy consumption and carbon footprint go up by 30% and 5.5%, respectively. Our decorations alone use up a staggering 6.63 billion kilowatt-hours. Fortunately, being more mindful of sustainable consumption and making a few tweaks to our regular activities can keep our wallets and the planet greener, along with helping us focus more on what the holiday spirit is all about: caring and celebrating. So here are a few easy and fun ideas to green our holidays.

And plastic is useful as it can help safeguard people from disease or contamination and then once used it can be thrown away.

We watched a seventeen year old Swedish climate activist inspire students around the globe to demand political leaders take action to drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions to stop climate change.

When you talk about making sustainable choices, some are definitely easier than others. It’s hard to imagine a life where you never get on an airplane or you never purchase anything in plastic. These are things we all know would help our planet, but it takes a lot of thought and effort. However, when you are at a restaurant, looking over a huge menu at a place like the Cheesecake Factory or your favorite Italian eatery, it is VERY easy to pick plant-based items or even easier to pick vegetarian. Eating less meat is the most impactful change you can make. Between Seattle and Bellevue alone, you can find endless plant based eateries from ice cream, to pizza, Vietnamese, Mexican and more. Restaurants from Q’Doba to Burger King now serve plant based meals. It takes no effort at all, other than uttering a few words, to use your power of choice to help our planet.
