How can you talk to your kids about climate change? And what are"climate emotions"?

Climate advocate Liz Hurtado (Moms Clean Air Force/EcoMadres) will be in conversation with award-winning journalist and parenting author Anya Kamenetz (Climate Mental Health Network) about the widespread problem of youth climate anxiety.

Anya and Liz will also offer strategies to best support our kids and ourselves in processing climate emotions and taking action.

Thank you to all who attended our March Parent Circle. If you missed it and are interested in learning more about the topic, please view the additional resources shared below. We encourage you to start this discussion at home with your family and consider this simple activity to help kick start a discussion in your home:

  • Choose ONE new tech habit you want to build or change in your family
  • Create a SMART goal (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely)
  • Example Habit: Put all phones to bed by 10:30pm, in the charging station in the living room from Monday to Friday for 2 weeks.  
  • Try it out for a week or two to see how it goes!

Mercer Island Parent Edge is a non-profit organization within the MI PTA Council that is run by parent volunteers.  We coordinate speakers and events for parents, educators, students and our community.  Our goal is to provide educational events and to encourage dialogue on issues and concerns in our community.

Based on survey feedback from parents about topics most important to them, we will spotlight these three themes. This year we've partnered with Parent Venture, a non-profit organization, to showcase their line-up of well-known authors, speakers and parenting experts that focus on topics of highest interest to MI families.  

What does that mean for you? These events will be accessible in a few ways:

  • Live webinar
  • Recorded programs (over 25 programs this year) and a large library of past programs
  • Spotlighted Parent Edge programming
  • Parent Circles: in-person, follow-up group conversations
