PTA Council Statement in Support of Mercer Island’s Jewish Community

We, the Mercer Island PTA Council, stand in support of our Jewish students and families. There is a deeply disturbing rise of antisemitism in our country, including recent events in our own community.  We are committed to embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion with a focus on respect and acceptance of every student and their family.  We stand not only against antisemitism, but all forms of discrimination.  There is no place for hate, intimidation, or violence in our community.

According to the Anti-Defamation League’s antisemitic incidents in the United States reached a record high last year. Sadly, hate speech has reached our own community with a recent series of incidents at IMS.  We are thankful for the response from MISD Superintendent Dr. Fred Rundle and his administrative team; this is ongoing work and we remain committed to education and advocacy efforts to ensure Mercer Island schools are a welcoming place for all students.

There are many opportunities to educate ourselves about Jewish history and antisemitism.  Learn more about the diverse voices within the Jewish community combatting antisemitism through the Anti-Defamation League and International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. We can also celebrate and learn more about our Jewish community, including events at the Stroum Jewish Community Center.

We stand with our Jewish community.
